In this article the author talks about implementing a new or old technique based on the person. That technique included that you think about the words that are put in essays or any types of writing. the author talks about questioning the writer, understanding why the writer put in a certain word in a piece. For me personally I already did this unconsciously without really knowing. Sometimes I would try it and recognize it, but didn’t rally know why I did it. Now that I know this technique I will be trying it a lot more and hoping I can dive deeper into the piece more then I do ordinally when I read. In the article he forces it upon the reader to do that technique because the author tells us about something and brings us back to where he did it. I didn’t really like being forced to try it. If I’m interested ill try it myself. It was a little repetitive when the author would do this, but it helped me understand it a little bit more then I did before. I liked that the author added example paragraphs, so we can try the technique for ourselves. I think that the author could have taken a more of a passive aggressive push at trying to get you to try it. The author could have keep the example paragraph and make like questions that are optional for the reader to try it out. I like the technique. I’ll have to try it a lot more in the future. Hopefully it will help with the harder to read types of books and help me understand what the author is trying to make of its piece. over all I enjoyed reading this article because it brought a new retrospect on a good way to read.
Reflection on “…and by island I mean paragraphs”
This article was very up and down for me. I liked a lot of it and dislike a lot. I’ll start with what I like. I liked that it was put on a map. I think that’s a very interesting and cool concept. I liked the pilot mode. That mode is so you can move around and navigate around the map. I also like that some of the paragraphs have stories about the people that lived there and also the description of the island and also what happened to the island during the years. It really brought a lot of light to what whose islands are and what they have and the people that lived there have been though. One thing I noticed with the paragraphs was that the personal stories seemed connected in a way. Like that person was on every island or he was the main character or the narrator or something.
There were a lot of bad things about this article. As I started reading it went good, but then the wording changed it surprised me. I would only get to about half way and the reading would change again. After awhile it got really frustrating trying to get to the same text, but never finding it because of what Tyler said It’s a big algorithm with a lot of text changes. I also found out the part were there was a paragraph that didn’t move you needed to click it. I thought I was getting a break when reading that one compared to the others. Turns out that I wasn’t. I think that should have been implemented into the instructions at the beginning of the article. I didn’t like that there wasn’t a since of direction on were to go in the article. Over all there was more bad things then good, but the good things stuck out to make it a toss up for me at the end.
“…and by islands I mean paragraphs”
Key Terms and Main Ideas: Sundry: A various kinds, several. Imprudent: Not showing care for the consequence of an action; rash. Bramble: A prickly, scrambling vine or scrub, especially a blackberry or other wild shrub of the rose family. Emigre’s: People that leave there own country in another, typically for political reasons. Crofter: A person that farms a croft
Commentary: Personally I like the look of the piece of this article a lot even though there are quite a bit of flaws I didn’t like. It was very information due to the paragraphs talking about the islands and telling us the history, some little fun facts, even some were about some stories of peoples experiences on that island or even what they found there. Personally I enjoyed the personal experiences more in this article because I love history and those stories are a little bit about the history of that island and that person. Other then the stories and the other aspects the author throw in a few paragraphs that describe isolated writing. The author compares islands to paragraphs. I can see where we comes from because they are different and not connected to each other and more. I agree with what the author states. He brings in a lot of good ideas like isolated writing is personal, narrative. Those are only a few that he put in the article. Over all its a good/cool article and I agree with what the article says about isolated writing and how it works and effects us.
Summary: The summary if this article is that on every island on the map in this article tells a story. Some tell personal stories, events, geological differences and traits. Most importantly the author is trying to get at that the island represent paragraphs and that the paragraphs are isolated just like they are in a paper or essay. The author also brings up that isolated writing is narrative and that isolated writing is personal etc.
“Reading Like a Writer”
Commentary: I stand with what the author states in this article because considering what the author says on that It will help you develop skills and become a better writer will always help. Also Mike says that it can help you come up with your own to use in your own writing. I like that Mike brought in other peoples ideas in his post to help bring light on what others think and help us better understand what reading like a writer really means. I also like that he started off with a story, so when he started explaining what reading like a writer is we can go back and she what specific parts he added and how he could have changed a few words and have us imagine what he could have change them too. In the essay he adds the little excise at the end for use to try it out for ourselves. I hardly see that in essays and I really think that is a good idea to help them understand and give it a try, so can try it for future use. He also added questions in the essay that you can ask yourself as you use this new technique, so you can get a further understanding on how to use this technique.
Summary: The summary of the article is to convince you to give this technique a try. Mike lists a lot of reason why this technique is helpful. He adds helpful question that you can answer to help you father understand what this technique is all about and he also adds an example story at the beginning of the essay, so when you read the essay and read about the tip and tricks you can go back to that text and try it out for yourself. Overall Mikes goal is to persuade you to adapt this technique, so you can learn the connect between reading and writing.
Making connections: After reading this article I didn’t have any connections with it. I haven’t done this technique or at least known about it. I think now knowing about this technique ill use it more in the future. Mike did a great job explaining why it was a good technique with the questions, stories with other accounts and the example story at the beginning and the end of the essay to look back on and to try it on.
Reflection on “Why Blog?”
My thoughts on the article is that it’s a good article it covers a lot of information and is very informational in many aspects. Even though I don’t agree with some of the things Reid states, buts it’s good. I think the part that we talked about in class about internet problems and blogging. It’s a good reason why blogging may not be for everyone. I agree with what Tyler and Zam said in class about trying to blog while not having access to good Wi-Fi connection. I feel like if you could write a post offline and have it save like it does on google docs, then it would improve the chances of blogging for others. With that improvement you could also come back to it and have it right there instead of having to look for it in the drafts. It took me awhile to find my draft because I’m new to this site and didn’t know how to navigate it. or even an auto-correct to help with the bloggers that have English as a second language. From personal experience with having bad internet and having your stuff disappear when your Wi-Fi goes out isn’t fun. It makes you not what to do it or put it off for awhile. What Reid says about the ten thousand hours to be a expert isn’t what I support and I know people that are experts that haven’t spend ten thousand hours doing that one thing. I also believe that the online bullies are always going to be there to critize the things you or another people post. People can be hurt by negative comments and that could be enough for them to stop making blogs or just to quit for a given time. From personal experience it is really discouraging and it makes you lose courage in what you posted.
“Whys Blogs?”
Connections: Personally I don’t believe that It takes ten thousand hours to become an expert stated by Malcom Gladwell. I know several people that are really good at there job and haven’t worked ten thousand hours that that job. For me riding a bike didn’t take ten thousand hours to master, so I don’t support their statement that becoming an expert takes ten thousand hours. I believe that what he is saying about intrinsic motivation to be true. I find it hard to be motivated when I’m required to be in a course when I don’t want to be there. I agree that If you find that inner motivation that it will become easier because you have been doing it for a while. Summary: The summary of the article is that no one is perfect and that it takes time to be good at some thing. Some examples in the writing are the ten thousand hours to be an expert. He is trying to say that it takes time to get good at something You may never be an expert if you never strive to get there. Another one is that it takes time to and dedication to get in in the habit of things like blogging. He is saying that it takes time and that no one is perfect. Analysis: Like I mentioned in my connections I don’t think that it takes ten thousand hours to become an expert or to be determined and expert because whet if you are a faster learner and learn it with in a couple of thousand hours? for some people they don’t need that ten thousand to be an expert at something. Also the blogging part. For some individuals the access to the internet can be very hard. What if you don’t live in a area where you can get good connection to the internet. Also in our generation critizing is all over the internet and it could be discouraging to make a blog that everyone can see.

Commons over copyright
I chose Create Commons because If someone wants to use my stuff it doesn’t bother me, all they have to do is give me credit. I didn’t want to completely have my stuff all to my self. I wanted to make it community friendly and accessible for others. I thought about copyrighting my content first because I didn’t know what the create commons was, but now that I know I feel like I chose the right decision.
